November is National Adoption Month. There are 25,397 children in foster care in New York State. Of these, 621 are legally freed and waiting for an adoptive family and 3,051 children have a goal of adoption (www.adoptuskids.org). The children who come into care have been abused and neglected. We have to be conscious that these children are in the child welfare system through no fault of their own. The children do come with their own set of issues that can be suppressed with support, love, understanding and most importantly not giving up.
