Why Sponsor

Young people who have aged out of foster care have serious educational deficits.  Securing a good paying job today typically requires more than a high school diploma.  Yet the college attendance rate of young people who have aged out of foster care is estimated at only 10%, compared with a graduate rate of 60% of all adults 25 or older.  Paying for college is a problem for many students, but it is an even bigger challenge for youth in foster care.  Few are able to save much money while in care, and most don't have family members they can tap for financial support.  Once a youth has begun college, it's important to provide continuing assistance.  Many have no one to call upon for advice about what courses to choose, let alone a place to stay over school holidays, when dorms are often closed.  Youth also need help meeting start up needs as well as help with maintaining housing as these youth can't count on moms and dads and aunts and uncles to provide them with hand-me-down appliances and furniture.  Many young people who have lived in foster or group homes are unlikely to understand the logistics of maintaining a household and could benefit from mentoring on issues like energy conservation, hidden phone charges, security and maintenance.
